Indian Presidents

K R Narayanan, first Dalit President of India, was a diplomat and politician before he became President. He served the office from 25 July 1997 to 25 July 2002.


Shankar Dayal Sharma, a champion swimmer in his youth, was a journalist, teacher and a former Chief Minister of Bhopal. He term as President began 25 July 1992 and ended 25 July 1997.


R Venkataraman was a lawyer and trade union activist before he took the plunge into politics. He was President from 25 July 1987 TO 25 July 1992.
Giani Zail Singh was a religious scholar and an exemplary public scholar. A former MP and Chief Minister of Punjab, Zail Singh was President from 25 July 1982 TO 25 July 1987


Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, freedom fighter and member of the Indian Constitutent Assembly, was veteran statesman and administrator. He was President from 25 July 1977 to 25 July 1982.


Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, lawyer and former Union Minister, was sworn in as President on August 24, 1974. He held office till his death on 11th February, 1977.


Varahagiri Venkata Giri, lawyer and trade union activist, actively took part in the Irish and Indian freedom movement. He held office from 24 August 1969 to 24 August 1974.

Dr Zakir Hussain, one of the founders of the Jamia Milia Islamia in New Delhi, was a scholar who translated Plato's `Republic` into Urdu. He was President from 13 May 1967 to 3 May 1969.

Dr S Radhakrishnan, one of the greatest philosophers of modern India, was first and foremost a good teacher: India celebrates his birthday as Teachers' Day. He was President from 13 May 1962 to 13 May 1967.

Dr Rajendra Prasad, a staunch Gandhian, began his professional career as a lawyer. He went on to participate in the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917 and was an important part of the nation's freedom movement. He was President from 26 January 1950 to 13 May 1962.
